Is Navy is the New Black?

Navy has always been a core color in everyones’ staple wardrobe. We tend to see that core staple colors usually would be black, white, or navy. For me personally navy has been really hard to style. I remember getting my first multipack of shirts and I always tended to reach for the black or white but never the navy. As of recently I wanted to challenge myself, in the sense that I wanted to make the color navy work. But I asked myself how was I going to do that, how can I make myself wear the color navy when I never thought it looked good on me personally.

Thankfully we have Pinterest, an internet world filled with creative ideas and inspiration just at my fingertips. It was able to give me so many ideas, although most of the outfits were monochrome which I thought was very odd.(see linked Pinterest here) I’ve always told myself that I needed to go more out of my comfort zone, so I decided to try a monochrome look and it was actually very stylish.

Let’s revisit what I was saying: navy is the new black. While black will always be “that” color, as it conveys professionalism and dramatic attention, navy offers a fresh and less expected approach in fashion.

Lately, fashion has been flooded with navy and also burgundy all thanks to TikTok and runway. It’s quickly becoming the new substitute for black. According to Julia Demer from Livingetc, “Fall 2024 runways were a tidal wave of navy, making up 11% of Louis Vuitton’s collection, 25% of Miu Miu’s, and a whopping 33% of Coach’s.”

I believe this is because navy is significantly softer and richer than black, which can appear harsher. I'm excited to see navy making a comeback, particularly the darker shades that can sometimes look black in varying lighting. This is the type of navy featured in the latest fall/winter collections on the runways this year.
